CARLOS BERNA
ACADEMY TENNIS PROFESSIONAL
Carlos, born in Zaragoza, Spain, was introduced to tennis as soon as he could walk, inspired by a family deeply rooted in sports—his mother’s connection to tennis and his father’s background as a cyclist fostered a natural inclination toward athletic pursuits. From an early age, tennis became a daily focus, and Carlos quickly progressed through the junior ranks in Spain while maintaining strong academic performance—an essential balance consistently emphasized by his family.
At the age of 15, Carlos took a significant step in his personal and athletic development by moving to Kansas City to continue his tennis training and immerse himself in a new language and culture. This experience proved pivotal, reinforcing his desire to pursue higher education and collegiate tennis in the United States.
Later on, Carlos earned a scholarship to compete at the NCAA Division I level, spending his first two years at Texas A&M–Corpus Christi, where the team won a conference title, before transferring to Coastal Carolina University. There, he reached the peak of his collegiate career, achieving the highest national doubles rankings in Coastal Carolina program history (#36 and #68). Over his five years of collegiate play, he also earned multiple All-Conference honors, demonstrating a consistent commitment to excellence.
Following his playing career, Carlos transitioned into coaching, serving as the Assistant Coach at Coastal Carolina University for one year. His experiences as an international athlete, combined with years of disciplined development significantly contributed to both his personal growth and the success of those around him.
Off the court, he pursued his academic goals with the same dedication, earning a degree in Civil Engineering with a minor in Applied Mathematics, followed by a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Real Estate. This diverse academic background equips him with a broad perspective and a mature understanding of life—qualities he brings with him onto the court.
Carlos now looks forward to sharing his passion, discipline, and experience with the TIA community, inspiring others to fall in love with tennis just as he did from the moment he first picked up a racquet.
